Then you will be ready to discover which one is best for you!
3 Meal Prep Methods
As a quick review, the 3 methods of meal prep are:
1 – Mass meal prep: This method makes meals in large quantity and then divides them up into individual portions to store or freeze for later.
2 – Batch cooking: In this method, you cook individual ingredients ahead to be used in different meals. This allows you to speed up future prep time but keep lots of variety.
3 – Multiple meal prep: You can prepare multiple meals at the same time to be stored or frozen and served later with this method.
Knowing the pros and cons of each method will help you determine which one is the best fit for you.
Now that we have reviewed the meal prep methods, let’s get started discovering 3 simple steps to succeed at meal prep. This will help you discover the best option to start using right away.
Decide your goal
The best place to start is to figure out what you are trying to accomplish with meal prep. If you know your goal, it is easy to know which method to choose.
Here is what I mean.
Meet Jill. She wants to lose 15 pounds and knows her diet is the key. Jill decides to focus on portion control and convenient meals so she doesn’t have to think about it.
Her perfect meal prep method is mass meal prep. This method allows her to cook, portion and store food so she is prepared for every meal. This keeps her on track.
Create your plan
Now that you have your meal prep goal set, you are ready to figure out how to make it happen. You can see what method makes the most sense for you to use and then figure out how to fit it into your life.
Check out this example.
Meet Stephanie. She is a busy working mom who needs short cuts to make dinner during the week for her family. Stephanie enjoys cooking but needs fast options and her family doesn’t want to eat the same thing over and over.
Stephanie is interested in batch cooking because she can cook 2-3 times a week and still offer her family lots of yummy variety.
Her plan is to cook on Sundays and Wednesdays, use the same base ingredients and have leftovers 1-2 times after each meal.
Map out your meal prep
After pinpointing your goal and deciding on your plan, you are ready to take the final step.
It is time to lay out the exact details of how you are going to make meal prep work for you.
To help you, look over this example.
Meet Chrissy. Chrissy needs help to get more organized and budget conscious while feeding her family. But she doesn’t want it to take over her life.
Her plan is to take 1 day each month to make 15 meals at one time, freeze them and be able to use them throughout the month when it worked best for her family.
The process will begin with choosing 15 recipes that will freeze well and use similar ingredients to maximize her food budget.
She picks lasagna, meatloaf, taco meat, pulled pork, shredded chicken, chicken enchiladas, chicken & veggie soup, pancakes, omelet muffins, breakfast casserole, quiche and a few more.
The crockpot, instant-pot, and Ziploc bags are her favorite tools for cooking and freezing her meals. Chrissy is able to successfully make all the meals in 6 hours following her meal prep plan.
